Puppy Mills & Pet Stores

Hi it’s Mr. Biscuit again.   I really love living in Austin, and I’ve met a lot of nice dogs, cats and people here.  It made me really sad though to hear that Petland was opening up in Austin.  I was so surprised, because I didn’t know Austin even allowed pets to be sold at pet stores!   Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE pet stores – without pet stores where would I get my biscuits?

Pet stores should be a place where you get yummy SNACKS, TREATS, SNACKS, FOOD, TREATS, TOYS, TREATS and other stuff for your pets, not a place that makes a bunch of money selling puppies that are born at puppy mills.  There are so many puppies looking for homes already, so it breaks my heart to think that thousands and thousands of dogs are being processed in factory farming facilities making even more pets, not to mention the horrid conditions they are born into.  Their mother and fathers are kept as “breeding” slaves their entire lives without ever leaving the cage they were born in, they don’t know what’s it’s like to be clean, have never been hugged, never snuggled next to a person who loves them, and don’t even know what a “walk” is.  I couldn’t believe it until I saw pictures of it.

I’ve heard some people say,  “Well someone needs to adopt those puppies at the store – they need homes too!”   Now, no one knows better than me that every dog deserves a home, and they can’t help where they come from, just like I can’t help that I’m a Pit Bull and people don’t like me.   But what people don’t realize is that every time they buy one of those puppies or buy things at stores like Petland that sell puppy mill puppies, they are keeping the puppy mills in business.  Also, I don’t think most people realize that 99% of all puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills.  They are so cute and irresistible – even I would want one!  But along with getting a puppy mill puppy often comes high veterinarian costs and unforeseeable health problems down the line.  I mean, I know some people want certain breeds, or have their heart set on getting a puppy, but I don’t understand why they just don’t go to a reputable breeder or a pure breed rescue group.

Reputable breeders take very good care of their puppies and kitties, and the moms and dads.  In addition, they are usually the same price as at the store or much, much less.  Of course, being a SUPER CUTE dog myself, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just want to go to the shelter and see if you’re lucky enough to get a dog as cute, smart, and loving as me!  (I clear the room with my farts once in a while – but who doesn’t???)

Every time one of the puppy mills are shut down, or go out of business, there are always many, many rescue groups and humane societies that offer to save these dogs, so I know that they will still get homes, even if people don’t support these stores.

I’m just a dog, so I don’t know that best way to go about getting the word out.  I know Oprah did a show recently on Puppy Mills, so I’m happy about that, because she’s famous and all, and people listen to famous people a lot more than they listen to dogs.  I mean when I’m staring at my dog bowl, I think it’s pretty obvious what I’m trying to say, but my mom acts like she doesn’t understand me.  What’s up with that???? Anyways, if I could speak “people” I would tell all of them to please, please, please, stop supporting stores that sell puppy mill puppies, no one deserves to live like that – please help save their moms and dads and just say No to Puppy Mills….

I got my puppy at a pet store and tried to get the information about the parents so I could get her registered. They assured me she was a purebred, but then couldn’t provide the information I asked for. Long story short - although I am keeping my baby because I love her to death and it doesn’t really matter if she has papers, I sued the company for false advertising when I found out my dog did in fact come from a puppy mill. It wasn’t about the money, it was just about them being dishonest. I got my money back and kept my baby!

Thanks Mr. Biscuit for helping to get the word out about puppy mills! Tell your mom I said you deserve extra treats for being so smart! With all the homeless pets in Austin, we certainly don’t need people trucking in puppies from another state. And it’s horrible that people would treat dogs so poorly just to make a buck. So what can we do? It’s simple… if EVERYONE stopped going to Petland, they would have no choice but to stop selling puppies. There are plenty of wonderful dogs and cats out there just waiting to be adopted!

I wasn’t sure if Mr. Biscuit was misinformed, because it looks like the puppies at the pet stores are well cared for. I did a little research on my own, no offense, but I don’t believe everything I read. Anyways, I was shocked to find out the truth about pet stores and that their puppies do come from puppy mills. I guess when you think about it, it does make sense becuase why would any reputable breeder give their puppies to a pet store. It seems like they should have to disclose this information. I can’t believe that puppy mills are even legal…something is seriously wrong here. Thanks for the enlightenment.

It’s very hard to create laws that outlaw “puppy mills” while still allowing breeders. Although puppy mills tend to be bad, or rather ARE, the conditions of the pets are often kept at just “adequate” so no legal action may be taken. It’s horrible to think that some female dogs are forced to have litters after litters their ENTIRE lives! Fortunately, many cities are starting to take action against such cases. I’m not sure of the exact specifications of these laws, but I do know that in Dallas, Texas, there was talk (and it might even be law now) that dog owners must pay yearly breeding taxes if their pets aren’t fixed. This at least allows the city to keep track of who is breeding their pets. Of course, there’s always those that will fail to register. The best way to support an end to puppy mills is by NOT buying the dogs in the pet stores. Yes, they need homes, but unfortunately, purchasing such dogs will lead to hundreds more needing homes. It’s best not to contribute to puppy mills whatsoever, even if it means having to sacrifice those initial puppies in the pet stores. If the puppies aren’t bought, the mills won’t get paid and so they will no longer be able to breed.

Thank you for speaking out against Puppy Mills, Mr. Biscuit! It personally breaks my heart just having to SEE the puppies from there-if you go to pissedconsumer.com and type in ‘Petland’ in the search bar, you will see MANY reports of puppies dying, being incredibly sick, having behavioral issues, and not even being the breed advertised.

I went into the Petland of Austin once, knowing that the puppies were mill pups. I saw a bichon with runny eyes, a standard poodle completely lacking energy, and many puppies looking lethargic. What’s more, they wanted $1200 for a yorkie MIX-of course it was advertised as a purebred yorkie, but its coat was wiry and coarse, its ears stood up like a chihuahua’s, its snout was long and thing, and its face was all tan, instead of the usual black and tan. Hopefully, with the boycotts going on, and people being educated, the Petland will be put to an end!
